Welcome to Out of the Box!

Every day dozens of packages arrive at the Horn Book offices. Most contain books which will be reviewed by The Horn Book Magazine or The Horn Book Guide. Some boxes, bearing paperback series or reprints, activity kits, pop-ups, movie tie-ins, or promotional materials, don’t. Others (like one including Champagne Cocktails: 50 Cork-Popping Concoctions and Scintillating Sparklers) seem intended for a different recipient altogether.

From board books to box sets, promotional Silly Bandz to heartfelt author letters, these books and bookish ephemera have often been seen only by Horn Book staff -- until now.

  1. This is a great idea for a blog. I can't wait to see what's coming out of those boxes! (And sometimes the outside of the box is interesting, too.)

  2. Actually Champagne Cocktails fits very well with my mental image of the Horn Book offices as a fantastical wonderland of books where Magical Things, like Scintillating Sparklers, appear. (Man, I hate it--I'm a school librarian--when people tell me I have their Dream Job. I bet you get that too. Possibly from me.)

  3. Here's how my job was once imagined by a well-intended new friend: "What fun it must be to sit around and read books by Maurice Sendak all day long." NOT.

  4. You know, in my role as a parent (of a 6-y-o)/critic/librarian, I got those Silly Bandz too, and I thought they were a brilliant idea! Why aren't there more Silly Bandz based on children's books!?

Concur with the person who thinks books about Champagne Cocktails may be apropos in your offices.

  5. Sadly I think any "scintillating sparklers" will have to wait -- but the holidays (and holiday parties!) are coming...
